Harrison Brothers Hardware
Alabama's oldest operating hardware store, on Southside Square, with original counters, a 1907 cash register, and a small museum.

A Hardware Store That Is Also a Time Capsule
Harrison Brothers Hardware, at 124 Southside Square, is the oldest operating hardware store in Alabama. The business began in 1879 as a tobacco shop, and the store moved to its Southside Square home in 1897. The Harrison family ran it for generations before the nonprofit Historic Huntsville Foundation bought it as a preservation project, and the foundation operates it today.
What You Will See
The original counters, shelving, cabinetry, and floors are still in place, and sales are still rung up on a 1907 National Cash Register. The building is also home to the Historic Huntsville Museum. The Southside Square buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Make It a Stop
It is a quick, charming visit and it sits on the square, so you can pair it with lunch at Cotton Row or pizza at Sam and Greg's, both on the same block.
