About Downtown Huntsville

Downtown Huntsville has a lot going on for a city that most people still picture as rockets and engineers. The center of town is built around Courthouse Square, with Big Spring International Park a few blocks away and museums, theaters, and a healthy handful of local restaurants in between. If you are visiting, this is where you base yourself. If you live here, it is where you take out-of-town guests.

The Layout

Two anchors define downtown. On the east side is Big Spring International Park, the green space that grew up around the spring where Huntsville began, with the Huntsville Museum of Art and the Von Braun Center right on its edge. In the middle is Courthouse Square and the Southside Square blocks around it, where the old brick storefronts now hold restaurants, shops, and one of the best-preserved hardware stores in the state, Harrison Brothers Hardware.

Just south of the square, the historic homes of Twickenham start almost immediately, and Old Town and Five Points sit a short drive or a longer walk to the north and east.

Where to Eat

Cotton Row is the special-occasion pick on the square. It serves a seasonal Modern American menu with French technique from chef James Boyce, in a historic brick building, and it is known for its wine cellar. For something more casual, Sam and Greg's Pizzeria and Gelateria is also on Southside Square, and Pane e Vino Pizzeria serves rustic Italian right by the art museum with views over Big Spring Park.

Coffee, Bakeries, and Beer

Downtown runs an official Craft Coffee Trail and a Craft Beer Trail, which tells you how many good local options there are. Canadian Bakin does hand-rolled bagels and craft coffee on Church Street. Piper and Leaf is tucked into Alabama Constitution Hall Park and is more of a tea shop with excellent coffee. Turbo Coffee is up on Meridian Street.

For beer, Green Bus Brewing pours from a 150-year-old building on Eustis Avenue (with Bus Stop Coffee inside), and Mad Malts leans into porters and stouts on Maple Avenue. Our brewery guide covers the rest of the trail.

Things to Do

The Huntsville Museum of Art is the main art museum, and EarlyWorks Children's Museum handles the hands-on history side for kids. Alabama Constitution Hall Park sits on the site of the state's first constitutional convention in 1819. The Von Braun Center hosts the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Broadway touring shows, and Huntsville Havoc hockey.

Downtown also hosts the Panoply Arts Festival each spring in Big Spring Park, so check the calendar before you plan a visit.

Getting Around

The core is compact and easy to walk once you park. Downtown has a BlueBikes bike-share program with stations around the center. You will still want a car for the Space and Rocket Center, Monte Sano, and most of the suburbs.
