Rockets, butterflies, a train ride, and a cave: the best places to take kids in Huntsville.
Huntsville is one of the better mid-size cities in the Southeast to visit with kids, mostly because the marquee attraction is an actual rocket park. Here are the places we would build a family weekend around. Check each official site for current hours and admission.
U.S. Space & Rocket Center
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is the reason to come. There is a Saturn V rocket overhead, the renovated Rocket Park outdoors with the Redstone family of rockets and a Saturn I, and some of the simulators and rides included with admission. Plan half a day or more. Your kids may also notice the Space Camp groups on campus.
Huntsville Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden has more than 100 acres to run around in, the Giant Troll Garden and Maze, and the Purdy Butterfly House, open seasonally, April 22 to October 11 in 2026. In winter, the Galaxy of Lights display runs mid-November through December.
EarlyWorks Children's Museum
EarlyWorks Children's Museum downtown has hands-on history and STEAM exhibits designed for younger kids, and it is a good rainy-day stop.
Bridge Street Town Centre
Bridge Street Town Centre has a carousel, a train ride, a lake, and a splash pad in warm weather, so it is a low-effort way to burn off energy and get lunch. Altitude Trampoline Park on University Drive is a good rainy-day backup.
Alabama Constitution Hall Park
For school-age kids, Alabama Constitution Hall Park is a living-history village with costumed guides. It is best suited to children ages nine and up.
Cathedral Caverns
About 30 to 40 minutes from town, Cathedral Caverns State Park offers guided tours of a huge cave and a giant stalagmite called Goliath.
Aviation Challenge
Older kids can try Aviation Challenge at the Space & Rocket Center campus, which runs programs for youth and adults.
