Monte Sano State Park
A 2,140-acre mountain park with more than 20 miles of trails, cabins, campsites, disc golf, and an observatory.

The Mountain Above Town
Monte Sano State Park sits on the mountain overlooking Huntsville, on about 2,140 acres. The state park was established in 1938, and the Civilian Conservation Corps built its amphitheater and rustic cottages in the Arts and Crafts style.
Trails and Recreation
The park has more than 20 miles of hiking trails and more than a dozen miles of mountain-biking trails, and the trails connect to the neighboring Land Trust of North Alabama's Monte Sano Nature Preserve. There is also an 18-hole disc golf course. For a full route list, read our best hikes in Huntsville guide.
Cabins and Camping
You can stay in one of the CCC-era rustic cabins, which have hand-built stone fireplaces, or camp in RV sites or primitive tent areas. Cabins book up, so reserve early for weekends and fall.
Stars
The Von Braun Astronomical Society runs an observatory and planetarium inside the park, which suits a town that named its own rocket center.
Nearby
Burritt on the Mountain is a short drive along the mountain, and Five Points is the closest neighborhood for lunch.
