Monte Sano

About Monte Sano
Monte Sano means "Mountain of Health" in Italian, a name the mountain earned in the late 1800s when the Hotel Monte Sano operated as a health resort. Today it is Huntsville's outdoor playground, with a state park, a nature preserve, a historic museum, and views over the city, all a short drive up from downtown.
Monte Sano State Park
Monte Sano State Park covers about 2,140 acres and was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It has more than 20 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, campsites, rustic cabins, and an 18-hole disc golf course. The Von Braun Astronomical Society runs an observatory and planetarium in the park. The Monte Sano Lodge, on Nolen Avenue, is used for events.
Monte Sano Nature Preserve
The Land Trust of North Alabama manages the Monte Sano Nature Preserve, next to the state park, with more than 20 miles of free public trails that connect to the park's trails. See our guide to the best hikes in Huntsville for where to start.
Burritt on the Mountain
Burritt on the Mountain is a 167-acre museum and historic park with a 1930s X-shaped mansion and a village of restored nineteenth-century buildings, and it looks out over the city.
Practical Notes
The mountain is a short drive from Blossomwood, Five Points, and downtown. There is no real commercial strip up here, so pack water and snacks, or stop for lunch in the city before or after.
