About Madison
Madison is its own city, right next to Huntsville on the west side, and for most visitors it is part of the same metro. It has a compact historic downtown built along the railroad, a minor-league baseball stadium, and a fast-growing set of shops and restaurants.
Historic Downtown Madison
Madison's downtown grew along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, which arrived in 1856, and the town was officially established in 1869. The layout still follows the tracks, which still run right through the middle of town. Main Street is the historic strip. Old Black Bear Brewing Company is a taproom here, and the Lanier Tea House is known for themed afternoon tea. The Madison Station Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Baseball
The Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, play at Toyota Field on Trash Panda Way, and the ballpark is part of a larger development called Town Madison.
Eating and Coffee
Moe's Original BBQ and Taco Mama are both on the St. Louis Street strip, and Chuck Wagon BBQ is known for Texas-style brisket. Honest Coffee Roasters has a downtown Madison shop on Shorter Street, and Piper and Leaf has a spot on Highway 72.
Practical Notes
Madison is a short drive from downtown Huntsville and Research Park. It is car-friendly, and Main Street is the one place where you can park once and walk.
