About Twickenham

Twickenham is the reason people say Huntsville has more history than they expected. The district is described by local tourism officials as Alabama's largest concentration of antebellum homes, and the streets are lined with Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate houses under big old shade trees. It sits right next to Downtown Huntsville, so you can go from a courthouse-square lunch to a historic-home stroll in a few minutes.

A Little History

Huntsville was originally laid out by LeRoy Pope as "Twickenham," named for the English home of a distant relative, the poet Alexander Pope. The town was renamed Huntsville in 1811, but the name survived as the label for this district. The Twickenham Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and expanded in 2015.

What to See

The main public stop is the Weeden House Museum on Gates Avenue. Completed in 1819, it preserves the story of the Weeden family and the work of Maria Howard Weeden, the artist and poet who was born there in 1846. Around it, the district holds other landmark homes, including the Thomas Bibb House and the Morgan-Neal House. Most of the houses are private residences, so plan on a slow walk or drive along the streets and enjoy the architecture from the sidewalk.

Just a couple of blocks away, Alabama Constitution Hall Park covers the story of the 1819 convention that wrote the state's first constitution, and it makes a natural pairing with the Weeden House.

Where to Eat

Twickenham Square, the mixed-use development next to the district, is the easy dining option. Ruth's Chris Steak House is the upscale choice. For something lighter, Taco Mama and Cajun Steamer Bar and Grill are both here, and Mei Wei Asian Bistro rounds out the block. Coffee and pastries are a short walk away at Piper and Leaf.

Living in Twickenham

Living here means historic houses, sidewalks, and being a short walk from downtown restaurants and the park. It is also a preservation-minded neighborhood, so exterior changes to older homes come with rules. If you are considering it, talk to the local neighborhood association and a local agent who works in the historic districts.
