A First-Timer's Weekend in Huntsville: 3 Days, Rockets to Mountaintops

Huntsville is more than a space town. Here is a three-day plan that covers the Saturn V, downtown, the breweries, and a mountain view, with real places to eat.

Huntsville is known as the Rocket City, and the rockets are real: this is where the Saturn V was developed. But a weekend here covers more than space history. There is a walkable downtown, a mill full of artists, a school that now pours beer, and a mountain with trails and city views. Here is a three-day plan that puts it together. Hours and prices change, so check each place's website before you go.

Friday Evening: Downtown and Big Spring Park

Start where the city started. Big Spring International Park grew up around the spring where John Hunt settled in 1805, and the red footbridge and fountains make it an easy first walk. The Huntsville Museum of Art is on the edge of the park.

For dinner, book Cotton Row on Courthouse Square for a seasonal Modern American menu, or keep it easier at Pane e Vino, which has views over the park. If you want to see the square, stop by Harrison Brothers Hardware, Alabama's oldest operating hardware store, before it closes.

Saturday Morning: The Space & Rocket Center

Get breakfast first. Canadian Bakin downtown does bagels and craft coffee. Then head to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The Saturn V Hall houses one of only three Saturn V rockets in the world, and Rocket Park outside has more than two dozen rockets and missiles. Plan on at least half a day. For a deeper look, read our Space & Rocket Center visitor guide.

Saturday Afternoon and Evening: West Huntsville

After the museum, head to West Huntsville, where old industrial buildings have new lives. Lowe Mill is a former textile mill full of artist studios. Kar's Char serves Texas-style barbecue inside it, and Happy Tummy is also in the building.

For beer, go to Campus No. 805, a former middle school that now houses Straight to Ale and Yellowhammer Brewing, with pizza from Earth and Stone. Stovehouse, in a 1929 stove factory, is the alternative if you want live music and a food garden. Our brewery guide covers more.

Sunday: Up the Mountain

Give Sunday to Monte Sano. Monte Sano State Park has more than 20 miles of trails, and Burritt on the Mountain has an X-shaped 1930s mansion and city views. If you only want one short hike, our best hikes in Huntsville guide has options for every level.

On the way back into town, stop at Big Ed's Pizza in Five Points, open since 1961.

If You Have Extra Time

Where to Stay

Downtown puts you within walking distance of the park, the square, and the Von Braun Center. Research Park and the Village of Providence have hotels near Bridge Street Town Centre, and Hampton Inn & Suites is in Hampton Cove if you want to be near golf and trails. You will want a car regardless.
